What to expect and common questions
Reaching out for help can feel daunting. Here are straightforward answers to what people most often wonder.
Do I have to be sure I have a sex addiction before I call?
No. You do not need a diagnosis or a label. If sexual behavior is causing you or your relationship harm, or you keep doing something you want to stop, that is reason enough to talk. We can sort out what to call it together.
What happens on the first call?
It is a short, private conversation. You tell me what is going on, I answer your questions, and we decide together whether to schedule a session. There is no pressure to commit.
Is what I say confidential?
Yes. Therapy is confidential, with limited legal exceptions, such as a serious risk of harm to yourself or someone else. I will explain these in detail at the start so there are no surprises.
How long does therapy take?
It varies from person to person. Healing the attachment wounds and trauma beneath compulsive behavior or betrayal takes time, and I will not rush it. We will check in regularly about how the work is going and what you need.
Do I need to stop the behavior before I begin?
No. You do not need to have it under control first. Coming in while you are still struggling is common, and it is a good time to start.
Do you see partners and couples?
Yes. I work with partners who have been hurt by betrayal, individually, and I see couples when it is a good fit. Usually couples work follows some stability for each person.
Do you help with disclosure?
Sometimes. Formal disclosure can help in some situations and cause new harm in others, so I consider it case by case and do not recommend it for everyone. We can talk through whether it makes sense for you.
Are sessions in person?
Sessions are mainly in person in Lakewood, NJ. If you live too far to come in, I sometimes offer video sessions when I feel it is clinically appropriate. This is decided case by case.
How do payment and insurance work?
I am a private-pay practice. I am out-of-network and provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement, depending on your plan. I am glad to discuss fees on our first call.
Ready to talk?
A first call is private and carries no obligation. Tell me a little about what brings you in, and I will respond personally.
